Aftermath of the reunion
First, we are back home safe and somewhat sound.  You all heard Karen's story about
slipping in the Missouri mud and falling on that rainy Saturday.  She scraped her knee,
tore her jeans and twisted her ankle.  WELL...as it turns out, she actually broke her
ankle!
She didn't think she had done that much damage but since it was still swelling and
hurting, she went to the Dr. on Friday and the xrays showed a small fracture.  She is in
one of those lace-up braces for abut 3 weeks.  I told her that since she will be 50 on Oct.
13, maybe she should not  try to do what she did at 17.  If anyone has a comment, you
can reach her at kfinster@cox.net.
Despite this, we both had a great time at the reunion and we are looking forward to next
year's.  The basket was great--left some things in St. Louis with Larry and Jackson but
brought most of it home.  I'm looking forward to reading everyone's  stories.
Take care and thanks for making our family feel so welcome every year.  My husband
was always SO proud of "his men" and  I can understand why.     Love,  Joan Mabrey
(P.S. You can post this on the website if you wish.)

Door Opens To Health Claims Tied To Agent Orange
By James Dao
Under rules to be proposed this week, the Department of Veterans Affairs plans to add
Parkinson's disease, ischemic heart disease and hairy-cell leukemia to the growing list of
illnesses presumed to have been caused by Agent Orange, the toxic defoliant used widely in
Vietnam.
The proposal will make it substantially easier for thousands of veterans to claim that those
ailments were the direct result of their service in Vietnam, thereby smoothing the way for them
to receive monthly disability checks and health care services from the department.
The new policy will apply to some 2.1 million veterans who set foot in Vietnam during the war,
including those who came after the military stopped using Agent Orange in 1970. It will not
apply to sailors on deep-water ships, though the department plans to study the effects of Agent
Orange on the Navy.
